Parkhead Post Match

From The Dung Heap
An analytical look at The Dons & our opponents

Parkhead Recap

Fuck me! We got a dra'! Get it up ye Lennon!

We didn't play 5 at the back. We were ballsy in posession especially once Deano came on and really did well. I didn't expect us to get anything, like every other club that's been to Parkhead this season but we played the game perfectly. We could very well have came away with all the points had things went a wee bit better at the end but in all honesty we didn't deserve it, but neither did they.

So Lowe basically played as a centre back? Nah, Ball was allowed so much freedom to roam forward and squeezed up to link well with Ferguson (who is the wee passing mark behind Wilson on the map) and Stewart which were our top 2 passing partnerships with 11 and 10 respectively. Is it time to get Ball signed up? Him and Considine offer so much cover along the back 4 and into the midfield that I think it would be daft not to as long as it isn't collosal wages.

And look where Shinnie is! God knows where he's found this attacking mid mentality but in most games he's been utilised in that role it's worked for us.

Lewis punting to Cosgrove didn't happen as much as I had feared and it paid off. The cluster on the right of midfield gave of a base to build attacks and make quick passes to keep possession. It was our 2nd lowest amount of long passes in a game this season sitting level with Burnley at Pittodrie and one lump less when we visited Ibrox and beat them 1-0.

We let Celtic's defensive 6 play with it (ooh er) along the half way line but they just couldn't make the link to the front 4. Toljan's links with Forrest who we pushed inside and Burke that we pushed deep didn't really get them much and our closing down was excellent. A few times they broke but the back 4 were resolute and it didn't come to much. Forrest at 35mins Edouard at 58mins were the only times they managed a counter attack of any real note with Forrest shooting too early with no help arriving and Edouard shooting straight at Joe for the latter.

Our recoveries on the deck are unsurprisingly centrered mainly around those links between Toljan with Forrest and Burke. McLennan's work on the ground being the best in the team is a tad surprising and maybe that stifled him and Lowe going forward and it looks like the same happened with Tierney and Sinclair as both attacks were so heavily favouring the right wing. A massive shout to Dean Campbell being second on the list having only been on the park for half the game. Phenomenal stuff!

xG is unsurprisingly low. 0.81-0.59. Both teams best chances had a value of 0.18 with Forrest's dribbler that was straight at Joe and Shinnie's that was blocked by Ajer both struggling to really get fans off their feet. May's "sitter" sat at 0.14 whilst Ball's strike that Bain easily dealt with wrapped up our "good" chances at 0.10. A Boyata header from a corner and Forrest's shot come cross that ended up out for a throw are really thr only Celtic chances worth mentioning and that brings a very dull bit of analysis to a close.

So well done the management team, well done everyone on the pitch (especially Ball, McLennan, Shinnie and Campbell) and well done to everyone who bothered with the trip. It didn't look like we were going to have much to cheer but we had exactly that come the final whistle.
